£6M+ upgrade for County Durham sewage treatment works

Northumbrian Water is to spend more than six million pounds to upgrade a County Durham sewage treatment works.

Next month the company will begin a year-long programme of work at its Hustledown sewage treatment works. The £6.5 million scheme will improve water quality in Stanley Burn and involve upgrading various assets and treatment processes on the site.

Northumbrian Water project manager, Hedley Young, said:

"Hustledown sewage treatment works treats up to 8.7 million litres of wastewater every day and serves around 16,000 people in Stanley, Southmoor, Bloemfontein and Quaking Houses.

"The work will also increase the amount of wastewater that can be treated at the site. When the work is completed it will have the ability to treat more than 12 million litres of waste water per day."

The company has 414 sewage treatment works across the North East treating around one billion litres of waste water every day, with more than 150 located in County Durham.
